Making clothes last a long time is important in moving toward a more sustainable wardrobe.
Also remember that taking care of one’s clothing always involves an impact on the environment. We use a lot of water to wash, and each washing machine wash releases detergent residues, microplastics derived from synthetic fabrics, and often toxic substances released from poor quality fabrics into waterways and later into the seas (through drains).
When we decide to purchase an item of clothing, we must also take responsibility for taking care of it. So here are some simple tips to make sure that the clothes we love can last as long as possible.
1 – WASH CLOTHES WHEN NEEDED: Airing a garment regularly helps keep it clean. When we then wash clothes, remember to use mild and bio-degradable detergents and always read the washing instructions on the labels. In general, washing at 30° will allow us to make our wardrobe last longer.
2 – WASH AND STENCH DARK CLOTHES AT THE WINDOW: This is an excellent technique to keep clothes from discoloring.
3 – AVOID THE DRYER: The use of the dryer is a consumption that you may well avoid considering also the fact that with this type of drying garments deteriorate much faster. So, if possible, we try to prefer natural drying in the open air. Ideally, lay in the shade so as to take advantage of the warm air (which softens the cloths) but out of direct sunlight.
4 – IRON ONLY IF NECESSARY: The first rule is to choose the right type of wash for different items of clothing. Then lay out carefully so that all the garments are not crumpled and inevitably need to be ironed. Losing a few minutes in these steps will save us hours and hours of ironing.
5 – BUY QUALITY GARMENTS: Another super important tip is to buy only quality garments that will enable us to use them longer. We all know that shopping boosts morale but we have also seen the disastrous consequences of fast fashion on our Planet. So try to buy only things you really need; remember to always read the labels so you can choose the best materials.
Follow these tips, take care of your garments and make sure you have a perfect wardrobe season after season!
